A symmetry analysis of mechanisms in rotating rings of tetrahedra
نویسندگان
چکیده
Rotating rings of tetrahedra are well known from recreational mathematics. Rings of N tetrahedra with N even are analyzed by symmetry-adapted versions of classical counting rules of mechanism analysis. For N ≥ 6 a single state of selfstress is found, together with N − 5 symmetry-distinct mechanisms, which include the eponymous rotating mechanism. For N = 4 in a generic configuration, a single mechanism remains together with three states of self-stress, but uniquely in this case the mechanism path passes through a bifurcation at which the number of mechanisms and states of self-stress is raised by one.

Continuous Symmetry Measures. 2. Symmetry Groups and the Tetrahedron
We treat symmetry as a continuous property rather than a discrete “yes or no” one. Here we generalize the approach developed for symmetry elements (Part 1: J . Am. Chem. SOC. 1992,114,7843-7851) to any symmetry group in two and three dimensions. Using the Continuous Symmetry Measure (CSM) method, it is possible to evaluate quantitatively how much of any symmetry exists in a nonsymmetric configu...

متن کاملThe crystal structure of parthiite
Partheite is a zeolite-like mineral of composition Ca2AI4Si401s(OH)2 . 4H20. It crystallizes with monoclinic symmetry, space group C2jc, a=21.555(3), b=8.761(1), c=9.304(2) A, p=91.55(2), Z=4, Dm=2.39 gjcm3, Dx=2.41 gjcm3. Its structure consists of T-centered T04 tetrahedra (T=AI,Si) which are connected via corners to a 3-dimensional framework. Due to the presence of hydroxyl groups the framewo...
متن کاملSurface traps for freely rotating ion ring crystals
Rings of trapped ions are an attractive system to study quantum-many body dynamics with closed boundary conditions as well as symmetry breaking. One of the biggest challenges towards such experiments is to sufficiently suppress rotational imperfections of the trapping potential and to allow for instance freely rotating ring structures. We show how to overcome this challenge with a surface trap ...
متن کاملMeasuring Symmetry in Structural Chemistry
Symmetry is treated as a continuous property and a Continuous Symmetry Measure (CSM) of structures is de ned. The CSM of a structure is de ned to be the minimummean squared distance required to move points of the original structure and change it to a symmetrical structure. This general de nition of a symmetrymeasure enables a comparison of the amount of symmetry of di erent shapes and the amoun...
